  2. Ancient India was prosperous because it maintained Vedic Life style. Of course no body has control over natural calamities. It is well established that soil rich in organic matter mainly based on cow dung and urine is able to retain moisture for a longer time and does not require frequent manual irrigation. With rains good rains in season, such organic farming can be quite good and productive. In fact Rig Ved mantra गाव उपावतावतं मही यज्ञस्य रप्सुदा | उभा कर्णा हिरण्यया|| RV8.72.12 tells that if cows are well maintained the soil with yagnas remains moist and highly productive, makes the farmers rich enough to sport gold ear rings. As of date majority of Indian farmers do not have access to irrigated lands.
